At one end: suppliers who invest in pharmaceutical-grade synthesis, independent third-party testing, and full analytical documentation. At the other: suppliers who sell mislabelled, under-dosed, or contaminated product with no verification whatsoever.
The practical consequences of poor sourcing range from ineffective product — where nothing happens because the peptide isn't what it claims to be — to safety risks from unknown contaminants or incorrect concentrations. For compounds where dosing precision matters, this gap is significant.
Third-party testing is the single most important quality signal. Any supplier can claim purity. Independent laboratory verification — with publicly accessible COAs (Certificates of Analysis) — is what separates legitimate operations from marketing claims.
02 — Evaluation Criteria
Before purchasing from any peptide supplier, use this framework to assess them. The non-negotiables are marked clearly.
Certificates of Analysis from an independent laboratory (not self-issued). Should include HPLC purity data and mass spectrometry confirmation. COAs should be available before purchase and traceable to specific batch numbers.
Good Manufacturing Practice certification means the facility follows documented quality control processes. USA-based GMP facilities are subject to FDA oversight. This is table stakes for a legitimate supplier.
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) verifies purity percentage. Mass spectrometry confirms molecular identity — that what's in the vial is actually the peptide on the label. Both tests together provide meaningful assurance.
Research-grade peptides should be 98% or higher purity. 99%+ is the standard for serious applications. Lower purity introduces contaminants that compromise experimental integrity and create unknown variables.
US-manufactured peptides are subject to FDA facility oversight. Overseas synthesis is not inherently problematic, but the regulatory environment is different. Verify that overseas facilities have equivalent quality documentation.
Membership in organisations like the American Peptide Association signals a commitment to industry standards and compliance practices. Not a substitute for COAs, but a meaningful signal of legitimacy.
03 — Warning Signs
These are the indicators that a supplier should not be trusted with your research protocols.
No COAs, or self-issued COAs only. If a supplier cannot produce independent third-party Certificates of Analysis, there is no verified evidence of what is actually in the vial.
Purity claims without testing methodology. "99% pure" as a marketing claim without HPLC data to back it is meaningless. Legitimate suppliers show their work.
No verifiable manufacturing location. Suppliers who are vague about where product is synthesised or refuse to disclose their manufacturing facilities are a significant risk.
Unusually low prices. Legitimate peptide synthesis with proper QC is expensive. Prices significantly below market rate usually indicate corners being cut somewhere in the quality chain.
Health claims or direct-to-consumer therapeutic framing. Research peptides are sold for laboratory use only. Suppliers who market directly for human therapeutic use are in regulatory violation — a signal of broader compliance problems.
No batch traceability. COAs should be linkable to specific batch numbers on your vial. Generic COAs that aren't batch-specific are not meaningful quality assurance.
